Once you have a vision that feels compatible with your passions and values, it is time to think about your one-year goals. Why just one year?
Executive Coach Tony Jeary explains it this way.
Let’s face it — the speed of life today is hectic and fast-paced. Time is the most important capital you have, and most people feel overdrawn….
The speed of life limits to about one year the length of time your Clarity Blueprint can be effective. In the course of that year, many things will change that you could not have predicted and over which you can have not control.
So Tony recommends that you create a detailed blueprint for the next 12 months, and be prepared to change it as you go along!
Today, we are going to work on your BHAGs…BIG, HAIRY, AGGRESSIVE GOALS. Push yourself to think as expansively as you can and articulate where you would like to be one year from today.
You are probably familiar with goal-setting, but just a reminder. To be effective, you goals must be SMART:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Realistic (but remember to think BIG here)
- Time Deadline
Are you ready to think BIG?
Fill in the following statements as though today is one year from now, and you have achieved everything you imagined!
* My dream business allows me to do (list the things you love here)…
* My dream business is making a huge difference in the world around me, because through it…
* My dream business is generating (gross revenues)…we are serving (fill in number of clients or customers)…
* Because of my dream business, I now have a net worth of xxxx.
* My first year in business has been successful beyond my wildest imagination (fill in what would be the most exciting achievement you can imagine here)
Remember, this does not have to be perfect. It just has to be clear. You can always change your vision along the way as you become more and more clear on what you want to accomplish.
Just one more thing. How did you feel when you wrote down your BHAG? Did you hear the little gremlin in your mind say, “You can never do that,” and making all kinds of excuses. That’s no surprise. It is just your nonconscious belief system rearing its ugly little head.
We’re going to start dismantling that belief system right here and now.
First, make a list of all your excuses. Start with these words:
I can’t do_______________________________
because _______________________________
Use as many lines as you need to really get all of your gremlin’s grumblings out in the open.
Now, ask yourself if the statements are real or imagined? Is there any way to get around them?
Finally, ask youself what you would do it you had no excuses.
According to Joe Vitale, dealing with your excuses is a key to achieving your goals:
“Whatever your answer, that’s a clue to your biggest goal.
Leave your excuses behind, and you will begin to attract wealth.
Leave your excuses behind, and you can achieve success, too.
Leave your excuses behind, and your life will begin to soar.
If you don’t act now, why not?
Whatever your answer, that’s an excuse.
Are you going to let it stop you?”
I love this Laurie, BHAG 🙂 Graphic and to the point. The silliest thing about excuses is that they are the blockages which prevent us from getting to our goals. Ryan
Thanks! I got BHAG from the guys at a bike shop I own. They know how to be aggressive about their goals. I think we could all learn a lot from athletes…they know how to push through the excuses.
