When people hear I am on sabbatical for the next 7 months, they envision me lying on the beach or lounging around the house in my pajamas. After all, the dictionary definition of “sabbatical” is “a period of rest that recurs in regular cycles.”
For some people, just hanging out may seem like a luxury. But not me…I am Renaissance Girl.
To me, a period of rest means the chance to put aside my real job and have the time to explore all the things I haven’t found time to do in the past few years.
Here is a bird’s eye view of the projects I have on my sabbatical list (in no apparent order):
- Write a book
- Make a video documentary of women entrepreneurs
- Take a Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica
- Finish yoga teacher training
- Learn belly dancing and Nia
- Become a certified nutrition coach
- Train for the Avon breast cancer 39 mile walk
- Complete a Century bike ride
- Create a video training program for health and wellness entrepreneurs
- Make a quilt
Oh, not to mention, research and write a law review article for my sabbatical project.
In true Renaissance Girl fashion, I thought I would launch right into these projects on January 1st. But I have discovered that there is something to be said for the notion of honoring the Sabbath. My overactive mind needed a break from its routine, and when I wouldn’t listen, my body sent me a bad cold to make me slow down and appreciate the stillness.
So here I am, three weeks later, just getting started on what I thought were my sabbatical projects. But now I know enough to take the time to check in every morning and see where my soul is leading me for the day. And if it leads me to lie on the beach reading novels, that is where you will find me!
